It allows you to earn commissions by promoting other companies’ products or services on your website or social media platforms. If someone makes a purchase after clicking your affiliate link, you receive a percentage of that sale.
Getting started may seem overwhelming at first, but by following some key steps, you’ll be set up for success. Here is a beginner’s guide to launching your affiliate marketing efforts:
Choose a Niche
First, narrow your focus to a specific niche. For example, you could focus on affiliate marketing health and beauty products, tech gadgets, pet supplies or travel accommodations. Building a website around a niche allows you to tailor content and affiliate product recommendations directly to that audience, which builds trust and increases conversions.
Set Up Your Website
Your website functions as your online hub that promotes various affiliate products to your audience. There are user-friendly website builders like Wix or WordPress that allow you to create an attractive, functional site even if you don’t have any web development experience. Focus on creating an easy site navigation flow and providing helpful informational content to organically working affiliate links in.
Become an Affiliate for Relevant Companies
Do research to discover companies in your niche that have affiliate programs you can join. Some popular affiliate networks include ShareASale, ClickBank and Rakuten Marketing. Each program will have its own process for approval and tools for tracking your affiliate links, so you get credit for sales driven. Once approved, you’ll receive special links that allow the company to identify you as the person who referred the customer.
Promote Affiliate Products
There are several free and paid ways to promote affiliate products:
- Content Marketing: Write reviews of affiliate products on your blog, comparisons between products, “best of” lists and other value-focused content your audience would find useful.
- Email Marketing: Build an email list and promote affiliate offers through your newsletter. Just make the bulk of content valuable information instead of straight-up sales pitches.
- Social Media Marketing: Share affiliate links and special offers on all your social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Consider taking out inexpensive social media ads to reach more potential customers.
- Influencer Marketing: Reach out to relevant influencers and offer a commission if they promote your affiliate products to their audience. This allows you to tap into an already-engaged following.
Track Performance
Affiliate programs provide you with unique links that allow you to monitor visitors, clicks and sales. Be sure to organize your campaigns so you can tell which strategies and channels are driving the most conversions. Continue focusing your energy on what works while phasing out any underperforming methods.

Look at affiliate marketing as a long-term venture that will grow over time. The more content you create, the larger your website audience will be. The key is continually providing affiliate value to readers in the form of recommendations and offers.
